Redlands Country Club, a climb revisited

Hole 6 at Redlands Country Club, pastel, 18 x 24

This scene of Hole 6 was one of my two choices for a recent commission for Redlands Country Club. Hole 18 was the scene selected (see my previous blog), but this scene of Hole 6 I knew I would have to paint one day. Hole 6 is a dramatic uphill fairway lined by beautiful mature oaks. I selected this approaching view on the left of the fairway to emphasize the contrast of sun-lit fairway and shadowed oak canopy.

In the work-in-progress image below you can see how I blocked out shapes/subjects making decisions about colors I planned to use, for example in the sky. Complex marks of pastel create textures that describe fairway turf, overlapping oak trees and, just as importantly, bring visual interest to the painting surface.
