John Balsamo was 7 years of age when he and his family left Sicily, Italy for America. This was following WWII and they disembarked at Ellis Island, NY. John’s is a familiar melting-pot story, one of passionate determination, hard work, and success.
I never met John. He died last year. What I know of John I learned from his son, Sal. Sal’s stories helped breathe life into the family snapshots he shared with me. The pencil sketch (below) is the pose I chose for John and the portrait study at the top of this blog it the guide I used to capture John Balsamo’s expansive spirit. The finished portrait I will share in the next few weeks.
