Drawing personality

Janetta, pastel 17 x 11

The local Starbuck’s is a social encounter that I enjoy, where employees and customers are part of that ‘parade of life’ that brings meaning to the day. I’ve drawn quick gestures and painted full scenes of this local subject many times and Janetta is my latest. One day I was waiting for my drink and studying the play of light in the store. Kevin was at the register and Janetta was closer to me and making drinks. The mixture of warm ceiling lights and cool daylight pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows bathed the scene in exciting colors. Janetta’s translucent, cranberry-colored dish earrings and bleached-white hair added to the playful effect and urged me to express–in my ‘artist’s’ shorthand–the goodness of that moment.

Painting in Santiago Canyon

The other day a friend and I went painting in a rural section of North Orange County. We chose a spot next to the highway with a 180 degree inspiration. Clarence snapped shots of me as I painted in the morning and after a lunch break I photographed him at his easel. I hope to share some of those sequenced images in a future blog.
